Keep the Hope Alive 5K Walk/Run to Honour Missing Child Michael Dunahee – Expect Road Closures

March 26, 2026

Victoria, B.C. – The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) is advising the public of the Keep the Hope Alive 5K Walk/Run taking place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

This memorial walk/run is dedicated to the memory of Michael Dunahee, who vanished from the Blanshard School playground on March 24, 1991, at just four years old. Though decades have passed, Michael remains missing, and VicPD continues to support efforts to find answers for his family. The investigation into Michael Dunahee’s disappearance remains one of the largest missing person investigations in Canada.

VicPD maintains contact with the Dunahee family, letting them know that Michael is never forgotten and that the case remains a priority for our officers. “We will always hold out hope and that will not stop,” says VicPD Chief Constable Fiona Wilson. “There have been a number of file reviews of the Dunahee case over the years, and I am confident that we have done everything we can to ensure that all of the evidence has been thoroughly examined but having said that, I really can’t stress enough the importance of making sure the public knows that if they have any information about this case, no matter how insignificant it may seem, we are open to hearing from them.”

Four-year-old Michael Dunahee has been missing since March 24, 1991. The Keep the Hope Alive 5K Walk/Run aims to keep his memory alive and raise awareness about missing children.

The event this Sunday, March 29, will require temporary road closures and impact traffic flow, and we ask the public to exercise caution and be mindful of participants.

Participants will gather and begin the route from Lyall Street, behind the Archie Browning Sports Centre. The route will proceed as follows: east on Lyall Street, north on Lampson Street, east on Wollaston Street, U-turn on Dunsmuir Road, west on Dunsmuir Road, south on Head Street, west on Lyall Street, south on Lampson Street, west on Munro Street, north on Fraser Street, and end on Lyall Street.

Road Closure: Lyall Street between Fraser Street and Joffre Street will be fully closed for the duration of the event, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Please be aware that this is not a closed route. Participants and the public should expect to share portions of the route with vehicle traffic. VicPD officers and reserve members will be present to provide police escort, traffic control, and security, prioritizing public safety and minimizing disruption.

This event is a memorial walk and run, not a race, and aims to keep Michael Dunahee’s memory alive and raise awareness about missing children.

VicPD encourages all members of the public to exercise caution when travelling in the area on Sunday, and to be mindful of participants. We thank the community for their understanding and support.
