VicPD Announces Changes to Policing Response for Weekly Palestine Marches

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 25, 2026

Victoria, B.C. – The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) announced today a transition in its operational approach to the weekly Palestine marches. After deploying officers for more than two years to maintain public safety during these demonstrations, VicPD is implementing this change to protect the health and well‑being of its officers while continuing to uphold the right to peaceful assembly.

Over this period, VicPD has dedicated more than 10,000 hours of officer time to managing these events. This transition is necessary to safeguard the well‑being of the workforce and ensure the department can continue meeting public safety needs across our communities.

“We recognize the passion and commitment of those participating in these marches,” said VicPD Chief Constable Fiona Wilson. “This decision is not a judgment on the merits of their cause, but a necessary step to ensure sustainable policing and protect the long‑term health of our officers.”

Beginning March 28, 2026, officers will share information with participants and businesses about the changes to operational support. VicPD has informed key community partners, including representatives from the City of Victoria, the Muslim and Jewish community leadership, and demonstration organizers.

Effective April 4, 2026, VicPD will no longer provide traffic control or related police resources for the street portion of the demonstration.

VicPD remains fully committed to protecting the right to peaceful assembly but strongly urges all participants not to march on roadways due to the serious and immediate safety risks this creates. We will continue to engage openly and consistently to ensure this transition is thoughtful, well understood, and as smooth as possible. We are sincerely grateful to community members and business partners for their ongoing support, understanding, and collaboration as we move forward together.
