Halloween Safety Reminder: Fireworks Prohibited in Victoria, Increased Park Patrols Planned
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 29, 2026
Victoria, B.C. – As Halloween approaches, the Victoria Police Department (VicPD) and the City of Victoria are reminding the public that fireworks are prohibited within city limits year-round. Over Halloween, VicPD officers will increase patrols in parks and public spaces, with a focus on enforcing fireworks regulations and addressing open alcohol consumption.
“Officers will be actively enforcing these rules over Halloween. Fireworks are prohibited in Victoria and Esquimalt, and open alcohol is not allowed in our parks. We want people to understand that these restrictions are in place for the safety of the community, and we will take enforcement action when called for,” said Inspector Conor King, VicPD.
Halloween is a time for costumes, neighbourhood gatherings and festive fun, but fireworks can cause injuries, fires and property damage. Their sudden, loud noises can also frighten pets and distress people who are sensitive to noise.
“We’re asking residents to leave fireworks out of their Halloween celebrations as their sale, possession and use are prohibited in the City of Victoria. By making safe choices, we can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe Halloween while keeping our emergency services available for those who need them,” said Chris Kelly, Captain Fire Prevention Officer, Victoria Fire Department.
Anyone found unlawfully possessing or discharging fireworks may face a $200 fine under provincial laws. Open alcohol is also prohibited in city parks. Under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act, individuals may be issued fines of:
- $230 for consuming liquor or possessing liquor in an open container in a public place (Section 73(1)).
- $115 for being intoxicated in a public place (Section 74(1)).
Help make this Halloween a safe and enjoyable celebration by leaving fireworks out of your plans, respecting public spaces and being considerate of our neighbours.
Help Keep Halloween Safe for Everyone
VicPD and the City of Victoria encourage residents to enjoy Halloween responsibly:
- Leave fireworks at home, fireworks are always prohibited in Victoria.
- Keep alcohol out of public parks and other prohibited public spaces.
- Be considerate of neighbours, children, pets and people who may be distressed by loud noises.
- Report fireworks use or other safety concerns to police.
Halloween can be fun without putting people, pets, or property at risk. By following the rules and looking out for one another, everyone can help make the season safer for everyone in Victoria.
