December Hit And Run Results In Motor Vehicle Act Charges

Date: Friday, May 6, 2022Files: 21-51412, 21-51493Victoria, BC – A Victoria driver faces several Motor Vehicle Act charges with significant fines and demerit points after an investigation into a December 30, 2021 hit and run.Officers were called to the intersection of Bay and Blanshard streets just after 9 a.m. on December 30th, 2021 after a pedestrian was struck while crossing at the intersection. The young woman was crossing the street, in the cross walk, with the light, when she was struck by a snow-covered vehicle travelling northbound that failed to stop for the red light. The driver of the vehicle continued through the intersection, narrowly avoiding additional collisions with other vehicles. The driver of the vehicle did not stop. Luckily, the young woman only suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. She was assisted by several other drivers and passers-by in the area, who provided key evidence, including video of the collision, to investigators.VicPD investigators notified the public of the incident and asked additional witnesses or those with information to come forward.Based on information from the public, officers were able to locate and seize a suspect vehicle with damage consistent with the collision the following day. The vehicle was processed by VicPD’s Forensic Identification Services, working with VicPD’s Collision Reconstruction Team. Officers interviewed witnesses, identified a suspect and applied for judicial authorization to enable access to key investigative information.The driver faces several charges under both the Motor Vehicle Act and the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations. They are: 

MVA 144 (1) (a) Drive without Due Care and Attention;

MVA 68 (1) Fail to Remain At Scene of Collision;

MVA 195 (1) (b) Drive while View Obstructed, and;

MVAR (3. 03) Illegible Plate.

The driver faces fines of $1075 and additional eight demerit points.
