Ensuring Public Safety During Weekend Protests

Date: Thursday, February 17, 2022File: 22-5757Victoria, BC – VicPD is continuing to work to ensure public safety while ensuring an environment for safe, peaceful and lawful protest this weekend. As part of these efforts, we have deployed temporary CCTV cameras in support of our operations to ensure public safety during protests planned in the B.C. Legislature area this weekend and are sharing information on how to report incidents during these events.As we have previously, we are deploying these temporarily placed, monitored cameras in public spaces in accordance with B.C. and national privacy legislation. Temporary signs are posted to ensure that those in the area are aware. If you have questions or concerns about our temporary CCTV camera deployment, please email: [email protected].Safe, peaceful and lawful protest are key Canadian rights and are enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Our role as a police department during protests is to remain neutral while we ensure that public safety and people’s right to protest safely, peacefully and lawfully is upheld. Dangerous and/or unlawful acts will be met with de-escalation and enforcement. This enforcement may include the issuing of violation tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act.A reminder:

  • For non-emergency incidents, call the non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654 and upon hearing the recording, select option 1 for the Report Desk.
