Date: Thursday, August 8, 2023 File: 23-28286 Victoria, BC – Officers, including members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT), have arrested a man following a criminal barricade this afternoon. Officers were called to the 400-block of Bay Street just before 1 p.m. for a report that a man, who had recently been arrested for assault causing bodily harm, was violating his release conditions. Officers attended a multi-unit residential building and located the man, who barricaded himself inside a unit there. GVERT officers, including Crisis Negotiators, responded, and worked to take the man into custody safely. Unfortunately, efforts to de-escalate the incident verbally were not successful. Officers evacuated nearby areas out of an abundance of caution.  Just after 5 p.m. the man surrendered after officers deployed irritant gas into the unit.  He was taken into custody. This file remains under investigation.
