Victoria Police Department Provides Statement on CoastSalish2Palestine Press Conference

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 28, 2026

Victoria, B.C. - The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) is providing further clarity regarding its recent decision to transition away from providing dedicated traffic control.

VicPD remains committed to upholding the rights of individuals to gather and express their views peacefully. For more than two years, VicPD worked closely and consistently with demonstration organizers to support the deployment of significant police resources to manage public safety risks associated with marches moving through active roadways.

Over this period, VicPD dedicated more than 10,000 hours to support these weekly demonstrations. This level of sustained operational commitment is unique and placed considerable demand on VicPD resources, often requiring support from partner agencies. When resourcing pressures made it increasingly difficult for VicPD to sustain this level of support over 126 weeks, we communicated these circumstances to all involved parties.

The decision to transition away from dedicated traffic support is based solely on operational realities. It reflects the need to ensure the long-term sustainability of policing services, while also prioritizing the health, safety, and well-being of VicPD members.

It is important to be clear that while the right to peaceful protest is protected, there is no Charter right to dedicate police traffic control or escort services.

VicPD also wishes to address several questions that have been raised publicly today:

  • VicPD did not frame these demonstrations in religious terms. This decision was rooted solely in member wellness and operational realities.
  • Engagement with community representatives was based on existing relationships and established lines of communication with partner groups.
  • VicPD has been in consistent communication with Palestinian rally organizers for over two years. This has included ongoing dialogue regarding safety, logistics, and expectations during demonstrations.
  • Chief Wilson’s direction has been to ensure that all relevant community partners with whom VicPD has established relationships are notified and engaged. This approach reflects standard practice and her commitment to our communities as a whole.
  • Any references to participation in commemorative events by Chief Wilson, including National Holocaust Memorial Day, are separate from operational policing decisions.

VicPD will continue to monitor demonstrations and respond as required where public safety concerns arise. Participants are encouraged to remain on the Legislature grounds and adjacent sidewalks, where demonstrations can take place safely.

VicPD remains committed to working respectfully with all community members while ensuring safe, sustainable policing services for everyone.
